Bai Ling bubbles like chilled champagne. The effervescent actress has been stirring up Hollywood for years. Now, she returns East to be feted at the Golden Horse Awards. “I'm so nervous,” she whispers into the phone as she packs her bags for Taipei.

“Can you imagine what this means? Huuge!" Bai Ling’s voice flutters like a canary. “The invitation was handwritten by [Oscar winning director] Ang Lee. Oh my God!” The Hollywood actress is excitedly packing her suitcases (plural, of course) as she prepares to be whisked away from Los Angeles above the clouds to Taipei, Taiwan. The Chinese-born star is nominated for a Golden Horse Award — the Oscars of Asia.
