A grand total of zero asylum seekers. That is the target that Denmark’s leading lady, prime minister Mette Frederiksen, put forth during a debate in parliament in late January.
Although the social democratic prime minister said that she wouldn’t be able to promise to keep the number to a zero, she outlined the target as part of her “vision” for the future. And she is already well on the way. In 2020 only 1547 asylum seekers were registered in Denmark - the lowest number since 1998. By comparison 21.316 people applied for asylum in 2015 in the year of the refugee crisis.
