Pundits forget. It was former President Barack Obama who first coined the phrase “fake news” to rail against conspiracies percolating, circulating and proliferating on social media aimed at heir apparent, Hillary Clinton, in the 2016 election.
Donald Trump swiftly appropriated the term, threw it back at his tormenters, and transformed a partisan cudgel into a personal weapon he’s been wielding ever since: “Fake news!” And the mainstream media has happily obliged.
