From its founding in 1971, Bangladesh’s first twenty-five years was characterised by civil war, natural disasters, famine, neo-Marxist incompetence and bloody coup d’états. In 1974 Henry Kissinger described Bangladesh as an ‘international basket case.’ Since the mid-1990s however, thanks to two remarkable women, Bangladesh, has become an economic success story eclipsing both Pakistan and India. Francis Pike was a bit part player in that transformation.
