Surely even the least self-pitying of public servants, Queen Elizabeth II, must sometimes think ‘What did I do to deserve my family?’ But though the Queen has been beset over the past three decades with the adulteries and divorces of her nearest and dearest, this made us feel even more respect for our solitary, stoic monarch, now an old lady who has given up her life to duty. She came out of such scandals even stronger, while the relatives who had embarrassed her slunk off to keep a low profile. What we are witnessing now, by the hand of her grandson Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, is something completely different.
