“The likelihood of this threat is 100%”

66 million years ago, a gigantic space rock slammed the planet and annihilated three quarters of life on Earth, including the dinosaurs. Swiss-American physicist Thomas Zurbuchen, who leads the Science Mission Directorate at NASA, warns that another apocalyptic asteroid threat is not a question of “if” but “when.” But rest assured. Zurbuchen tells Die Weltwoche that NASA is preparing a spectacular space mission to protect Mother Earth.

While the world reels from the bodily invasion of a microscopic coronavirus, danger hovers high above in cold, dark outer space. Diverse in form and texture, this apocalyptic threat can take on the dimensions of a sprawling metropolis.  One such behemoth exterminated the magnificent Tyrannosaurus Rex and its fellow prehistoric giants 66 million years ago.
